Ovation TV taps clients Jeff Phillips & Lauren Conn to adapt ‘The Chronicles of Ara’ for eight-p

SANTA MONICA, CA – April 13, 2016 Ovation has hired the writing duo of Jeff Phillips and Lauren Conn to adapt Joel Eisenberg and Stephen Hillard’s fantasy book series The Chronicles of Ara for an eight-part miniseries.

The pair were hired on the strength of their genre-bending episodic pilots Invoke and Lovecraft Country. Phillips is an executive producer on DreamWorks Studios’ time-travel adventure Stealing Time. He has also sold screenplays to Warner Bros. (Fort Knox) and Spyglass (Valley of the Gods), among others. Conn is a recent graduate of Loyola Marymount’s Screenwriting Program. “Jeff and Lauren’s unbridled enthusiasm to adapt The Chronicles of Ara series makes them the perfect fit for our network,” said Cate Weber, development executive at Ovation. “We’re thrilled to have such a terrific collaborative team in place to bring this unique series to life.”

The Chronicles of Ara centers on Ara, a muse who inspires all of art and invention, but who is corrupted upon a tragic loss. Using parallel storylines, the characters include some of history’s more renowned “dark authors” — J.R.R. Tolkien, Mary Shelley, Lewis Carroll, H.G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe — as they are inspired to pen their greatest works. In modern day, within these authors’ books are discovered clues of an impending apocalypse, as has been influenced by the power of their creations.

“The stars have aligned,” said Hillard, “with the combination of Ovation’s focus on the arts and phenomenal screenwriters who have delivered an absolutely unique adaptation. We are very fortunate to work with such an incredible team.”

Stephen Hillard, Joel Eisenberg, and Gilbert Adler (Valkyrie, Superman Returns) are executive producers. Eisenberg and Hillard are repped by CAA. The Chronicles of Ara book series is published by Topos Books, a fantasy imprint of Incorgnito Publishing Press.

The deal was negotiated by Rob Rader, General Counsel of Ovation, along with Richard Marks and Matthew Gabriel of The Point Media. Phillips and Conn are repped by Jim Strader of Quattro Media and Jeff Frankel and Mike Castrillo of McKuin Frankel Whitehead, LLP.
